Despite a SaaS-only trend rising across IT vendors, on-premise deployment options are still required by leading enterprises

Hosting services and deploying technologies in the cloud is advantageous for the obvious reasons – it allows for quick and easy configuration and management. Furthermore, updates can roll out automatically, users can access platforms from anywhere, and hardware resources aren’t a concern. Simply put, it’s lightweight.

A majority of the DevOps tools are now built to be cloud-native, yet, the most successful vendors are companies like Splunk ($8.45B), SolarWinds ($4.5B), and AppDynamics ($3.7B) – all of which offer on-premises deployment of their solutions.

So why is it that so many enterprise IT organizations still choose to use on-premises solutions?

Sending Monitoring Data to the Cloud still has Risks


“The public cloud is all about capacity, not performance,” explains Gary Thome of HP in his post, Letting the Cat Out of the Bag: Public Cloud has Latency Issues! When an application is hosted on the public cloud, infrastructure is shared across a massive number of users. While the public cloud offers unlimited capacity, cost savings and flexibility, the model results in capped performance. Organizations, like DropBox, are returning from public cloud services to in-house data centers to avoid potential performance degradation and latency of data transfer.


As we very well know from the Amazon S3 outage in February, the public cloud isn’t perfect. Because of “high error rates with S3 in US-EAST-1”, some of the most widely-used services across the world were inaccessible.

Albeit, these reliability issues are not common, businesses that want full control over the availability of their solutions still choose to host those solutions on-premises.


When all of your private data lives in a public cloud, highly sensitive information becomes vulnerable and attractive to breaching. Other risks include compromised credentials, hacked API’s, or even permanent data loss. Aside from the loss of business, security incidents could result in fines or lawsuits, depending on the policies of your organization.

Whether or not public cloud providers have overcome security challenges is a popular debate, however, each business is still responsible for protecting their data and many choose not to take that risk.

On-premises solutions are still the best way to ‘own your data’

Because of risks that still exist in the public cloud, many IT organizations prefer, or even require, on-premises solutions to support their DevOps teams.

As the name implies, on-premises deployment refers to installing and running software on local servers within the building of the organization using the software, rather than on a public cloud.

When I ran a monitoring survey at the 2015 AppSphere conference, nearly 70% of respondents reported that they prefer to deploy their tools on-premises. Speaking with enterprise IT professionals today, not much has changed.
